History Rambut Siwi Temple

This is related to the mythology of the arrival of Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha from East Java, or Majapahit, to Bali. According to Mpu Bhaskara Murti of Geria Madu Sudana in Negara city, when Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha arrived in Bali, one of the temples he visited was Rambut Siwi Temple. When entering the temple, the temple guard demanded that Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha pray at the temple. Otherwise, he would be faced by a tiger. Because of this obligation, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha prayed at the temple. However, the temple was in ruins. Therefore, the temple keeper apologized to Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha and asked for the temple to be restored to its original state. With wisdom, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha returned the temple to its original state. As a sign of respect, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha took a strand of his hair and placed it in the temple to be used as a means of worship in the temple. Since then, the temple has been known as Rambut Siwi Temple, or better known as Rambut Siwi in its current popularity.

When Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha arrived in Bali, the ruler of Jembrana was I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, who was known for practicing the Bairawa teachings. The Bairawa teachings are a branch of the Tantrayana teachings. However, in ancient times, many people misunderstood this Tantrayana teaching. For example, one misunderstanding is to interpret Maituna as free and erotic sex. In fact, the essence of Maituna teachings in the Tantrayana is a yogic attitude to strengthen and enhance the relationship between purusa (male) and pradana (female) in a person. Through this relationship, greater spiritual power can emerge from within, which in turn can express the sanctity of the Atman (individual soul) to achieve Brahman (a higher state of self). In the Mahanirvana Tantra, it is stated that the Tantrayana actually strengthens the power of Guna Sattwam (goodness and tranquility) and Rajas (dynamism and activity). Thus, the teachings of the Tantrayana actually aim to build a physically and mentally healthy identity through increased spiritual awareness and deeper self-control.
