Brahma Vihara Arama is the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali, also known as Banjar Buddhist Temple. The Vihara is located in Banjar Tegeha Village, Banjar Sub-district, Buleleng Regency, about 22 km to the west of Singaraja or 11 km from the Lovina tourist area. From the capital city of Denpasar, the trip to the monastery takes about two hours, or about 100 km, via the Denpasar-Bedugul-Singaraja highway. Previously, there was a monastery at Banjar Hot Water Spring with a very limited following of only 25 people. The purpose of visiting this place varies from meditation to just dropping by, especially due to its proximity to Lovina Beach. History Brahma Vihara Arama

According to historical records, Brahmavihara Arama Banjar was built in the mid-20th century AD. In 1960, the temple was still under construction and was finally completed in 1970. After waiting for three years, the monastery was inaugurated in 1973. Previously, there was already a monastery in this location, but the size was not too large, and the followers were still very few, estimated to be only around 25 people. Over time, the number of Buddhists grew so that the monastery could not accommodate all of them. The monastery management then held a meeting and decided to build a larger monastery in Banjar Tegeha, Banjar Village, which has an empty land area of approximately 1 hectare. Over time, the building area of Vihara Arama was expanded to 4 hectares to build a miniature Borobudur. Finally, the monastery was inaugurated and managed by the Girirakkhito Mahathera Foundation. Today, Brahma Vihara Arama is one of Buleleng places of interest and the most frequently visited tourist attractions in the northern region of Bali.

Meaning name Brahma Vihara Arama

Brahmavihara Arama consists of three words, namely: Brahma, Vihara, and Arama. Brahma means great, very noble, praiseworthy, and sublime. Vihara means way of life, and Arama means place. Often, the word Vihara is interpreted as the same as Arama, which is a place to live. From the meaning of the word, Brahmavihara Arama means a place to train oneself and forge noble or praised behavior, which includes Metta, Karuna, Mudita, and Upekkha. The name Brahma Vihara was given by the late Bhante Girirakkhito, the founder, very much in line with the purpose of its establishment. These noble behaviors, which include Metta, Karuna, Mudita, and Upekkha, can be explored, lived, realized, and practiced through Vipassana Bhavana meditation. Brahma Vihara is also used as an object of meditation, so Bhante Girirakkhito proclaimed Brahmavihara Arama as a place of meditation. We realize and believe that humans consist of Rupa and Nama, namely the body and mind, also known as Panca Khanda. Panca Khanda are the five aggregates of life, Panca Khanda are what is called life and living, or what is commonly referred to as human beings. consisting of the physical body (Rupa), feelings, perceptions, thoughts, and consciousness (Nama).
