History Bali Bedugul Botanical Garden
In 1958, a senior official in Bali proposed to the department now known as the Centre for Biological Research and Development under the Indonesian Institute of Sciences to build a botanical garden that would double as a research institute and recreational park. Kusnoto Setiodiwiriyo selected a 50-hectare site on forest land owned by the Government. On July 15th, 1959, the Bali Botanical Garden was officially established on the hillside of Tapak, Candikuning Village, at an altitude of between 1250 and 1400 meters above sea level.
The Bali Botanical Garden was originally established as a place to collect various types of conifers (non-flowering seed plants, or gymnosperms) from around the world and as a place of recreation, equipped with facilities for scientific, cultural, and technical activities. However, construction was halted around 1965 due to the insecurity of the time. It was not until 1970 that the garden began to be rehabilitated in stages. On April 30, 1976, the restoration was completed, and the area was increased to 129.2 ha. Its function was also expanded from plant collection to ex-situ conservation of plants from the dry and seasonally wet highlands of eastern Indonesia.
In 1998, the Bali Botanic Garden had grown to an area of 154.5 ha with a plant collection of about 16,000, including more than 1,500 species from more than 320 genera and 155 families. Some specialist collections include orchids, ceremonial plants, medicinal plants, cactus, ferns, bamboos, and trees. The four main functions of Bali Botanic Garden are exploration, inventory, research, conservation, education, and recreation. The institute provides a range of scientific services and facilities to support plant research and conservation, including a herbarium, library, greenhouse, nursery, and plant registration database.
