Ujung Water Palace History

In 1908, there was a Netherlands invasion where the regent status was under Dutch colonial rule and the King of Karangasem was given the authority to regulate the territory and wealth. I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, later titled Ida Anak Agung Anglurah Karangasem, became the last king to rule East Bali from 1909 to 1945. The king of Karangasem during this time became the architect of the Ujung Water Palace. Ujung Water Palace is a stunning garden with a large fish pool surrounding a relic building of the Karangasem Kingdom that was used as a resting or meeting place in its day. It is located in Ujung Countryside, about 5 kilometers from Amlapura City. In the beginning, the park only had a very haunted and secret pool called Di Dirah, which, during the reign of King I Gusti Gede Putu (1849-1893) and his brother Gede Oka (1849-1890), was used as a place of exile for people suspected of using black magic (leak). During the reign of I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, who began leading the Karangasem Kingdom in 1909, the pond area was expanded and developed with the construction of several ponds and luxurious buildings such as the European-style Bale Gili (modern style), which later became known as Taman Sukasada/Sukasada Park Ujung Karangasem or Ujung Water Palace, which is estimated to have been built in the 1930s.

Ujung Water Palace Geography

Ujung Water Palace is strategically located on the beachfront, in the southern part of Karangasem city, and is surrounded by many springs in the vicinity. Historically, most of these buildings are relics of the Karangasem Kingdom, both on Lombok Island and Bali. The entire complex consists of a pool and a Gili building located in the center of the pool, similar to Mayura Park and Narmada Park on western Lombok Island.

At the top end of the Ujung Water Palace complex, there is a large statue in the shape of a “warak” (rhinoceros). Below the warak statue, there is also a bull statue. From this high place, we can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea, hills with green and lush forests, and the beauty of Mount Agung, along with green terraced rice fields.

The greatness of Ujung Water Palace was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, which was then exacerbated by a major earthquake in 1979. However, recovery efforts have been made to restore the palace complex to its former glory with reconstruction and revitalization projects. Although not as great as it once was, the amazement of the past can still be seen in this place today.

Mascot East Bali Tourist Destination

We can say that Ujung Water Palace is the mascot of tourism destinations in eastern Bali because Sukasada Park has been famous overseas since the 1920s and became even more popular in the 1930s when foreign tourists started coming to Bali. The King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, known as Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, was a national leader, writer, and architect. He not only created beautiful gardens but also built various buildings in Puri Agung Karangasem, including the pagoda-style gate. If you are on vacation in Bali, you should visit the garden located at the end of Ujung Water Palace. The beauty of the stunningly landscaped gardens will complete your Bali tour experience, especially for those who want to explore the eastern part of the island.
