Our Sumatran elephant herd hails from Palembang, Sumatra, and is the largest land creature and one of the most intelligent species in the world with a brain very similar to humans. These elephants have exceptional cognitive abilities, coupled with a huge appetite, consuming up to 250 kg of food every day. They are also emotional creatures that can communicate using infrasonic waves that are inaudible to humans. Elephants are known to mimic, use tools, paint, solve problems and even help other species in distress. Your journey will begin at the 100-year-old traditional Sumatran buffalo enclosure which is also the boarding area for visitors. After that, you’ll board one of our Sumatran elephants and travel through the zoo’s various areas on enchanting, meandering routes under the guidance of an expert handler. The journey continues beyond the park, where you can see directly where the elephants bathe and rest.
Your journey will continue through the wild forest surrounding the zoo where you will cross the Wos River on elephant back, heading towards natural waterfalls and beautiful grassy valleys. In Bale Bengong, one of the stopping points on the route, you can disembark to drink fresh young coconut water and hike up the hill to visit the oldest village temple in the area, which is more than five centuries old. After completing the tour, we invite you to interact with our elephants including feeding and petting them.
