The Elephant Mud Fun program allows you to get down and play with the friendly Sumatran elephants while an experienced elephant handler explains their behavior and lifestyle. You will discover interesting facts in this activity, such as the elephants’ habit of basking in mud during summer to regulate their high body temperature. Elephants use mud to keep cool and protect themselves from the sun as they don’t have sweat glands. Although their skin appears tough, elephants can feel their skin burning from exposure to the sun. Did you know that elephant skin can be up to 2.5 centimeters thick? This thickness, along with the folds and wrinkles of the Sumatran elephant’s skin, protects them from the scorching rays of the sun. Elephant skin can withstand up to 10 times the water pressure of human and other animal skin. Sumatran elephants routinely keep their skin clean with dust or mud baths, which act like sunscreen, providing moisture while repelling insects.
