The Barong and Keris Dance Performance is one of the most famous dances in Bali. It is part of the Kintamani Besakih Tour where the performance tells the story of an epic battle between good and evil. Similar to Kecak Dance, this dance also features a conflict between good and evil spirits. Barong is a representation of goodness that can appear in various forms. However, in this Barong Dance comes in the form of Barong Keket which is considered the most sacred. Barong Keket is depicted as a unique creature with a combination of a shaggy dog and a lion. Two men will play Barong Keket, and the technique used is similar to the clown-horse technique in circus performances. The witch Rangda is the main opponent of the Barong who represents the forces of evil. The battle between Barong and Rangda is not only a performance, but also a central theme in traditional Balinese stories. Usually, the story is also performed in temples associated with death, adding a spiritual dimension to the performance.
Goa Gajah holds a lot of priceless historical heritage. The site exhibits ancient relics that show a unique encounter between Hinduism and Buddhism. The name “Goa Gajah” is thought to be derived from the word “Lwa Gajah”, which refers to the monastery or hermitage of Buddhist monks. Archaeological findings show that Goa Gajah Temple dates back to the period between the 9th to 11th century AD. In its heyday, the temple doubled as a monastery for Buddhist monks and Shiva priests. This harmony of functions reflects the seamless union of Buddhism and Shiva in the past.
The village of Kintamani offers a breathtaking natural charm from the heights of the hills. The extensive panorama includes the still active Mount Batur and the vast Lake Batur in its lower valley. From the point of view of Kintamani, visitors can enjoy the landscape that blends with the beauty of the lake. Kintamani is known as a unique mountain tourist destination, with cool air during the day and cold air at night. The journey to Kintamani from Denpasar usually takes about 2 hours via the land route. The main destination of the tourists is usually in the Penelokan of the Kintamani district. As the name implies in Balinese, Penelokan is the most strategic location to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature.
Besakih Temple has a long history that dates back to the 15th century. However, the oldest record of its existence is found in the inscription of 1007 AD. Since the era of the Gelgel Dynasty in the 15th century, Besakih Temple has been recognized as the central and holiest temple in all of Bali. This temple became the center of Hinduism on the island. Also known as Penataran Agung Temple, the complex consists of 22 temples lining the ridge. Besakih Temple embodies the philosophy of Tri Hita Kirana as the Balinese concept of life balance. This philosophy emphasizes harmony between humans and God, fellow humans, and humans and the surrounding nature.
Kerta Gosa Ancient Court Palace is an amazing architectural heritage of Bali. The complex consists of two main buildings namely Bale Kerta Gosa and Bale Kambang. Bale Kambang got its name because it is surrounded by a pool called Gili Park. The uniqueness of Kerta Gosa lies in the decoration of the ceiling and the roof. The Kamasan-style painting, which originated in the village of Klungkung, has decorated the upper surface of the building. This style of painting is similar to fiction and is very popular among the Bali people. Initially, these paintings were made on fabric and parba. However, since 1930, the paintings have been transferred to eternity. The restoration process was carried out carefully to preserve the authenticity of the picture, so that its beauty remains awake to this day.
