Most people recognize the shape of an elephant, especially its long trunk and large body. However, there are two main types of elephants in the world, the Asian Elephant and the African Elephant. The differences between the two can be seen in body size, ears and tusks. Asian Elephants, for example, are smaller and have rounded ears, while African Elephants have large bodies and large, rounded ears. In addition, Asian Elephants sometimes have smaller tusks or even no tusks at all. Thus, these striking differences suggest that Asian Elephants are indeed smaller than African Elephants. Nonetheless, both species are herbivores, which means they eat plants as their main food.
Indonesia is home to an endemic elephant species, the Sumatran Elephant, which is a subspecies of the Asian Elephant. The natural habitat of the Sumatran elephant is confined to the island of Sumatra. Elephants can weigh up to about 6 tons and stand about 3.5 meters tall. Sumatran elephants tend to live in groups to avoid predators and protect their young. Usually, one group consists of four to five elephants.
