According to local residents, the history of Tamblingan Lake began in the era of the 10th to 14th centuries AD. At that time, there was a large settlement around Tamblingan Lake, whose center was located on Mount Lesung to the south of the lake. For some reason, the inhabitants moved away from Tamblingan Lake and divided themselves into four different areas not far from the lake. The four areas later became villages named Munduk Village, Goblek Village, Gesing Village, and Umajero Village. These four villages have spiritual ties and are responsible for and obligated to maintain the sanctity of the lake and surrounding temples. According to historical evidence, thousands of years ago, this area was inhabited by people with a very organized life, both in terms of government and economic and socio-cultural systems. This was proven by the discovery of inscriptions some time ago.

Meaning Name Tamblingan

The name Tamblingan was not just chosen but has a deep meaning according to the surrounding community, which considers Tamblingan Lake as a sacred lake. The name Tamblingan comes from two Balinese words, namely “Tamba”, which means medicine, and “Elingan”, which means memory or spiritual ability. It is told in the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul that once upon a time, people in the area were hit by an epidemic. As a solution, a sanctified person went down to a small lake below the village to fetch water as medicine. Thanks to his prayers and spiritual abilities, the water was then used to heal the villagers. The words “Tamba” and “Elingan” gradually turned into “Tamblingan”. Until now, the name of this lake has been known as Tamblingan Lake, which gives a beautiful charm to the tourists who see it. This lake is also often used as a camping site by foreign and domestic tourists.
