Pandawa Beach History
In the past, Pandawa Beach was hidden and difficult to access as it was located in a deep valley surrounded by white rock cliffs. To reach this beach, one had to climb down small steps on the cliff with a dangerous valley below, and only the locals could access it due to their jobs as fishermen and seaweed farmers. However, the situation has changed. Thanks to the inspiration and hard work of the local people in developing their village, they managed to break down the cliff and create an access road that can be traveled by any vehicle. Since the opening of this access, Pandawa Beach has been visited by domestic and foreign tourists every day. Now, the journey to the beach is easier, with views of the limestone cliffs that were split to make access to the beach, creating a mesmerizing view for visitors.
Panca Pandawa Statue at Pandawa Beachn
The name Pandawa Beach comes from the story of the five brothers in Mahabaratha, namely Yudistira, Bima, Arjuna, Sahadeva, and Nakula. This story has been an inspiration for the Balinese Hindu community in their social life, which reflects their culture and values. On this beach, there is the Panca Pandawa Statue, which consists of five statues depicting the five Pandavas: Bima, Yudhisthira, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva. These statues are placed on a hollowed-out hill, becoming a special attraction for visitors. The story of the Five Pandavas is taken from the Mahabharata, where they were once locked up in the Gala-Gala Cave. To escape with great effort, they tunneled into the wilderness. That’s where they established the Amertha Kingdom, led by Yudhisthira as king. This story inspired the local community to name the beach Pandawa Beach, recalling the story of the Pandawa Five’s struggle to transform the wilderness into a great kingdom. Similar to the story of the Pandawa Five, Pandawa Beach used to be difficult to access as it was hidden behind a cliff. However, with the creation of access across the cliff, the beach became more accessible, similar to the struggle of the Pandawa Five to change their fate. Therefore, the Panca Pandawa Statue was made on this beach to commemorate their struggle to reach the beach, which is now a popular tourist destination.
