The story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana

The following is the story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana which follows the birth and actions of the mythical bird Garudaas, quoted from Wikipedia. You can find this story carved on a stone relief placed at the GWK Street Theater. The story of Garuda’s birth and deeds is told in the first book of the great epic Mahabharata. According to the epic, when Garuda first emerges from his egg, he appears as a raging fire equivalent to the cosmic blaze that scorches the world at the end of every age. Frightened, the gods begged him for mercy. Garuda, hearing their pleas, reduced his size and energy. Garuda’s father was the creator-sage Kasyapa. His mother was Vinata, and his sister was Kadru, mother of snakes. One day, Vinata gets involved and loses in a stupid bet, which results in her becoming her sister’s slave. The Mahabharata mentions a bet between Kashyapa’s sisters and wives, Vinata and Kadru, about the color of Uchchaihshrava’s tail. Meanwhile, Garuda and Aruna’s mother Vinata said white, Kadru said black. The loser must be the servant of the winner. Kadru told his son, Naga (“snake”), to cover his horse’s tail to make it appear black and thus, Kadru won.

Deciding to release his mother from this bondage, Garuda approached the snakes and asked them what it would take to purchase his freedom. Their answer was that Garuda should bring them the elixir of immortality, also called amrita. It was a difficult task. Amrita was at that time in the possession of the gods, who guarded it jealously, for it was the source of their immortality. They rang the potion with great flames that covered the sky. They had blocked the path to the elixir with vicious mechanical devices in the form of sharp, rotating blades. And finally, they placed two giant poisonous snakes next to the potion as deadly guards. Undaunted, Garuda rushed to the residence of the gods with the intention of seizing their treasures. Learning of his plans, the gods met him in full battle array. Garuda, however, defeated the entire army and scattered them in all directions. By taking the waters of many rivers into his mouth, he extinguished the protective fire that the gods spewed out. Reducing his body size, he slithered past the spinning blades of their killing machine. And finally, he destroyed the two giant snakes they had placed as guards. Taking the potion into his mouth without swallowing it, he launched it again into the air and headed towards the eagerly waiting snake. On the way, he met Vishnu. Instead of fighting, the two exchanged promises.

Vishnu promises Garuda the gift of immortality even without taking the elixir, and Garuda promises to become Vishnu’s mount. Flying next, he met Indra, the god of the sky. Another exchange of promises took place. Garuda promised that after he delivered the elixir, thus fulfilling the snakes’ request, he would enable Indra to recover the elixir and take it back to the gods. Indra then promised Garuda a snake as food. Finally, Garuda landed in front of the waiting snakes. Placing the concoction on the grass, and thereby freeing his mother Vinata from her bondage, he urged the snakes to perform ablution before eating her. As they rush to do so, Indra bursts in with the elixir. From then on, Garuda became an ally of the gods and a trusted steed of Vishnu, as well as a mortal enemy of snakes, who fell prey to him at every turn.
