Orangutans are endemic to the island of Borneo and can only be found in Indonesia specifically in Borneo. There are three species of orangutans: Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) found in Borneo and Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) found in Sumatra, and Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) which were only discovered in 2017 in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra. However, orangutan populations are currently declining and are classified as critically endangered. The main cause of the threat to their populations is deforestation and habitat destruction mostly caused by the conversion of forests into oil palm plantations and other agricultural land. All orangutan species are listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Although orangutans are protected by national and international laws, existing regulations are often not effective enough to protect these magnificent species.
